Evaluate SEO and AI-search studies before changing strategy
A large dataset can generate a useful hypothesis without establishing a universal ranking rule. Read the method, sample and uncertainty before converting a research headline into a change request for your own website.
Identify what was actually observed
Record the collection dates, platforms, languages, industries, question selection and unit of analysis. One million citations can include repeated observations from a smaller set of answers or domains. Determine whether results came from search-enabled products, a model API, logged-in accounts or another environment. An answer generated under different conditions may not describe your buyers’ experience.
Distinguish association from intervention
If high-authority sites appear more frequently, the study may show association with brand size, content coverage or other shared characteristics. It does not isolate the effect of buying links or changing a metric. Look for exclusions, comparison groups and definitions of missing observations. Vendor-funded research can still be informative, but its commercial context belongs beside its conclusions.
Design a bounded follow-up
Choose one plausible mechanism and a small set of relevant pages. State the proposed change, expected observable result and what would count against the hypothesis. Record concurrent marketing activity and technical releases. Retain an unchanged comparison where practical. Publish an honest uncertainty note when the sample is too small; do not turn an inconclusive result into an invented uplift percentage.
Illustrative scenario
A study links a vendor’s domain score to AI citations. A Danish manufacturer checks whether its own product documentation is accessible and useful before purchasing a score-improvement campaign. Its test records cited URLs and enquiry quality, while treating the published relationship as a hypothesis.
Acceptance checklist
- The sampling method and product context are recorded
- Causal claims match the research design
- A follow-up has disconfirming evidence and uncertainty criteria
