Practical resources

Understand PageRank without confusing it with vendor scores

Understand PageRank, third-party authority scores and link context, then improve useful internal connections without chasing an invented number.

Original guide · English & Danish

PageRank describes a link-analysis idea associated with Google. A commercial domain score is a provider’s own measure, not access to Google’s internal calculation. Use links to understand relationships and discovery rather than chase a single authority number.

Separate the model from the product metric

Links can connect useful resources and help search systems discover pages. Public SEO tools use their own indexes, coverage and formulas to summarise parts of the web. Different scores can disagree without either reproducing Google’s private ranking systems. Ask what a metric actually measures.

Read the reference in context

Look at the linking page, its audience, surrounding explanation and target. A relevant citation can help a reader verify a claim. A high domain score does not automatically make an unrelated placement useful or justify a paid ranking-credit arrangement.

Apply the idea inside your website

Provide crawlable links from relevant pages to important resources. Use descriptive anchors that help the reader predict the destination. Review orphaned pages and unnecessary detours, while resisting rigid formulas about an ideal number of internal links or a guaranteed amount of transferable authority.

Put the method to work

Illustrative example

Illustrative choice: a specialist specification page is difficult to find. The team links to it from relevant product and installation guidance. The change improves the reader journey and discoverability without assigning an invented PageRank increase to the page.

Your next steps

  1. Identify the owner and definition of each score.
  2. Review linking-page context.
  3. Connect useful internal resources.
  4. Avoid purchasing ranking-credit promises.

Questions & answers

Can I read Google’s current PageRank for a page?

Do not assume a third-party score reveals Google’s internal calculation. Treat it as the provider’s metric.

Is the highest-score link always best?

No. Relevance, reader value, placement context and policy considerations matter beyond a single number.
