Turn link-earning tactics into a delivery plan

Choose a link-earning tactic by its evidence, editorial fit and delivery cost, then assign the work and assess useful responses.

Original guide · English & Danish

A tactic becomes useful when your team can produce something a publisher genuinely needs. Start with your available expertise and evidence. Build a short delivery plan that identifies the reader, the contribution, the owner and the reason for approaching a particular publication.

Choose the evidence you can maintain

Original research, a practical calculator and a specialist explanation require different resources. Choose a format your team can verify and update. A small, transparent dataset can be more useful than a broad survey with unclear sampling. Document the method and the person responsible for corrections.

Match the tactic to a real editorial need

For a broken reference, first confirm that your resource genuinely replaces the missing information. For expert commentary, answer the question within your competence and disclose relevant interests. For an unlinked citation, verify that the publication actually refers to your work before requesting a correction. Avoid mass-produced pitches based on a domain score alone.

Budget production before outreach

Estimate research, review, design, maintenance and communication time separately. Keep a record of approaches, responses, corrections and resulting references. Stop a tactic when its evidence is weak or its recipients consistently find it irrelevant. Paid arrangements require appropriate disclosure and link qualification; do not present purchased ranking signals as earned editorial endorsement.

Put the method to work

Illustrative example

An engineering team chooses a downloadable specification checklist rather than a large survey. A technical reviewer checks the definitions, a content owner maintains the version date, and a small set of relevant trade editors receives a concise explanation of the problem the checklist solves.

Your next steps

  1. Choose one format with a credible evidence owner.
  2. Write the reader’s problem in one sentence.
  3. Complete and review the resource before pitching.
  4. Record responses and maintenance obligations.

Questions & answers

How many publishers should receive the same pitch?

Relevance determines the list. Write to publications where you can explain the specific reader benefit. A high sending volume cannot repair a weak contribution.

Should a tactic guarantee a number of links?

An independent editor controls publication. Agree deliverables such as research, resource creation and outreach quality rather than guaranteeing editorial decisions or ranking improvements.
