Practical resources

Evaluate the effect of one backlink without overstating causation

Evaluate a single backlink using placement evidence, change records and referral observations while keeping ranking causation claims proportionate.

Original guide · English & Danish

A new link and a later traffic increase can occur together without one proving the other caused it. Evaluate the reference, its audience and the surrounding changes before drawing conclusions from a single-link test.

Record the placement itself

Save the linking page, target, anchor, publication date and link attributes. Check whether the reference is editorial, commercial or user-generated. Ask whether a reader can understand why the target is cited. A badge or accreditation link may have trust and referral value separate from search performance.

Build a dated change record

Record other content releases, technical fixes, promotions and demand changes around the same period. Review the specific landing page and relevant query group instead of only site-wide traffic. Keep the original measurement definitions so that a reporting change does not masquerade as a link effect.

Report what can actually be observed

Describe referral visits or qualified enquiries when reliable first-party tracking supports them. Treat ranking movement as an observation with alternative explanations. One before-and-after comparison rarely isolates a backlink’s causal effect, especially on a small or seasonal website.

Put the method to work

Illustrative example

Illustrative test: a trade organisation cites a member’s safety guide. The member records referral enquiries and sees a later search change. Its report separates the known referral activity from the unproven ranking explanation, while noting a simultaneous guide rewrite.

Your next steps

  1. Save the link and placement context.
  2. Annotate other website changes.
  3. Review the target page and query group.
  4. Separate observed referrals from causal claims.

Questions & answers

Can one good link matter?

It may help readers find or assess a resource, but its search effect cannot be guaranteed or cleanly inferred from timing alone.

Should I buy a link to run the test?

Do not create ranking-manipulation schemes. Evaluate genuinely relevant references and follow search-engine link guidance.
