Find competitor reference gaps worth investigating

Turn a competitor backlink export into a shortlist of relevant publications, reference gaps and resources worth creating.

Original guide · English & Danish

A link gap is a research lead: a publisher references another business but has no visible reference to yours. Investigate the editorial reason before proposing outreach. The useful outcome is a better resource or a relevant relationship, rather than a copied list of domains.

Compare the right competitors

Choose businesses competing for the same audience and subject. A national news site appearing for one query is not necessarily a useful commercial comparison. Export referring pages from a data provider you already use, recording its date, market and coverage. Different providers can discover different portions of the web.

Inspect the actual citing page

Open each promising page. Record the surrounding passage, the purpose of the citation and whether the resource remains maintained. Remove irrelevant directories, copied articles and placements that exist mainly to sell links. A domain-level authority score cannot explain why a particular citation helps a reader.

Design a defensible contribution

Ask what evidence is missing: a reproducible calculation, an accessible specification, a local dataset or a clearer explanation. Create that contribution before contacting the publisher. Explain its relevance to the existing article and let the editor decide whether it belongs. Track useful replies and referral visits separately from any ranking changes.

Put the method to work

Illustrative example

Suppose several suppliers are cited in a maintenance-cost guide. Your company can contribute a transparent spreadsheet with stated assumptions. The outreach explains which calculation the spreadsheet supports; it does not ask the editor to reproduce a competitor’s anchor text or promise a reciprocal link.

Your next steps

  1. Select three genuinely comparable businesses.
  2. Deduplicate referring pages and inspect the citation context.
  3. Record the missing evidence and its intended reader.
  4. Prepare the resource before sending a tailored approach.

Questions & answers

Does every competitor link represent an opportunity?

No. A reference may depend on a unique partnership, news event or product test that you cannot reproduce. Keep only opportunities where you can contribute independently useful information.

Can Gavek discover these links automatically?

The current free tools do not include a backlink database. Use an existing provider’s export for this workflow or agree a separate research scope.
