Keywords & research

Keyword ranks in rank tracker but not in manual search?

A ranking is an observation made for a query, market, device, and time. Track a deliberate set of keywords consistently, then connect changes in visibility to impressions, relevant clicks, and completed business actions.

Guided workflow + specialist support

From signal to decision

Make the information
useful to your business.

Manual searches and rank trackers can disagree without either being broken. Search experiences vary, and Search Console's average position aggregates observations rather than reproducing one fixed results page. A single day's movement is therefore a weak basis for changing a successful page.

01

Understand the baseline

Define the query set before measuring progress. Include important commercial topics, supporting questions, and branded searches as separate groups. Document country, city where relevant, language, device, and the result type you intend to observe.

02

Choose the work

Record the ranking URL as well as the number. If a different page appears, investigate whether it better answers the query or whether two pages overlap. Avoid changing both pages before understanding which audience each serves.

03

Verify and learn

Review trends over an appropriate period and annotate releases, migrations, content changes, and known measurement interruptions. Compare like-for-like query groups instead of averages distorted by newly added keywords.

Use the free Gavek tools for a public-page snapshot and browser-based planning. This wider workflow may require Search Console, a third-party data provider, CMS access or a separately agreed specialist service. Live rank databases, automatic CMS changes and account integrations are not included in the current free tools.

Ask Gavek
Why does Search Console show another position?

Its average position reflects multiple impressions and contexts. It is not a promise that everyone sees one exact place in the results.

How often should I review rankings?

Use a cadence that supports a decision. Weekly trend reviews and focused investigations after meaningful changes are often more useful than reacting to every daily movement.
