Authority & links

Broken link checker

A tool's lost-link label means its crawler no longer observes a previously recorded link. It does not establish why the link changed, whether the source is still accessible, or whether your website needs an intervention.

Guided workflow + specialist support

From signal to decision

Make the information
useful to your business.

Links disappear for ordinary reasons: pages move, editors update articles, websites close, or a crawler encounters an error. Repairing a useful destination is worthwhile, but reacting to every disappearance can waste time and create redirects that do not help visitors.

01

Understand the baseline

Preserve the original source URL, target URL, anchor text, observation date, and prior status. Revisit the source and target separately. Distinguish a removed link from an unavailable source, changed destination, or temporary crawl failure.

02

Choose the work

Check your destination's current response and relevance. If content moved, redirect the old URL to the closest genuinely equivalent page. If the resource is intentionally gone and has no replacement, a clear not-found response may be more honest than a homepage redirect.

03

Verify and learn

Prioritize by reader value and evidence. A relevant editorial reference sending qualified visitors deserves more attention than an automatically generated directory copy. Check whether other important links point to the same broken resource before deciding the repair scope.

Use the free Gavek tools for a public-page snapshot and browser-based planning. This wider workflow may require Search Console, a third-party data provider, CMS access or a separately agreed specialist service. Live rank databases, automatic CMS changes and account integrations are not included in the current free tools.

A few good questions

Clarity before you commit.

Ask Gavek
Should every lost backlink be recovered?

No. Prioritize useful, relevant references and valid destinations. Some losses are normal, and restoring a poor-quality relationship may not benefit readers or the business.

Does a redirect guarantee the old ranking returns?

No. A relevant permanent redirect helps users and search engines understand a move, but visibility depends on many factors and may take time to settle.
