An honest first-year review separates delivered capabilities from untested ambitions. This is a review framework, not a claim that Gavek operated in 2020.
Separate delivery from ambition
List what users could actually do, with a verification method for each capability. Record abandoned experiments too. Registrations, website visits and retained usage answer different questions; do not substitute one for another.
Explain decisions, not just milestones
Organise the review around assumptions that changed. Describe evidence, uncertainty and the consequence for the next planning cycle. A chronological list of launches does not explain whether useful customer problems were solved.
Make the review challengeable
Give definitions and comparison periods beside numbers. State how feedback was collected. Distinguish observed changes from possible explanations, and publish customer details only when appropriate permission exists.
Make the next review easier
Keep the evidence register throughout the year instead of reconstructing it at year-end. Assign someone to preserve release checks, feedback context and decision notes. The next review can then show how earlier uncertainty was resolved.
Put the method to work
Illustrative review: a team releases a page checker but postpones account integrations. It demonstrates a successful check, names the limitations and explains the research needed before integrations. No fictional growth curve is needed.
Your next steps
- Link released capabilities to verification evidence.
- Record a stopped idea and its reason.
- Assign the next review date and evidence owner.
Questions & answers
Should every review include revenue?
Only publish verified figures that are appropriate to disclose. A clear delivery and learning record can still be useful.
Is this Gavek’s historical annual report?
No. It is a practical framework for preparing an honest first-year product review.
