Policies & working methods

Recognise community contributions with evidence and consent

A framework for acknowledging contributors, documenting useful work and avoiding invented awards or endorsements.

Original guide · English & Danish

Public recognition should explain a real contribution. A name on a website is not proof of expertise or permission to imply endorsement. This framework describes responsible recognition; Gavek is not announcing award winners, customers or an existing hall of fame.

Define the contribution

Choose observable work: a reproducible bug report, a clearer learning resource or a useful implementation method. State who decides and what evidence is considered. Avoid criteria based only on spending, follower counts or promotional links, which reward visibility rather than helpfulness.

Ask before identifying people

Explain where names, affiliations and contributions will appear. Seek permission for the specific use and confirm how each contributor wants to be described. Credit work accurately without turning a helpful comment into a claim that the person recommends your entire product or business.

Maintain an accurate record

Keep a dated explanation of the recognition and provide a correction route. Explain changes to criteria instead of rewriting the meaning of older entries. Remove unsupported claims promptly. An honest small list is more useful than borrowed logos and impressive but unverified descriptions.

Put the method to work

Illustrative example

Illustrative programme: a contributor finds ambiguous wording in an accessibility checklist and proposes a clearer test. The publisher verifies the correction, asks permission to credit it and records what changed. No payment, ranking benefit or commercial endorsement is implied by the acknowledgement.

Your next steps

  1. Publish clear contribution criteria
  2. Verify work before describing its value
  3. Obtain permission for names and affiliations
  4. Provide a correction or removal contact

Questions & answers

Can a customer logo be recognition?

Only with appropriate permission and an accurate explanation of the relationship. A logo should not silently imply a testimonial or partnership.

Should recognition include performance figures?

Only when figures are substantiated and authorised for publication. A useful contribution needs no invented traffic or revenue claim.
