# Make SEO decisions when your measurement data is incomplete

Distinguish missing collection, hidden report rows and genuinely lower demand. Build an evidence register and make bounded SEO decisions without invented precision.

A reporting gap is not automatically a traffic decline. Search Console, analytics and enquiry records describe different interactions. When totals disagree, investigate before changing the content budget. Explain which observations support the decision and which questions remain open.

## Define the comparison before investigating the gap

Write down the decision, source property, period, time zone, market and page group. Record the exact metric: a search click, measured session, confirmed submission or qualified enquiry. These are different events, so there is no universal reconciliation percentage. Compare consistent conditions within each source first. Put tracking launches, consent changes, website releases and campaign activity beside the trend as context.

## Separate collection failures from reporting limits

For a collection question, ask whether the approved event fired at the correct point and reached the intended property. For a reporting question, inspect the report's data-quality information, filters and available dates. Search Console omits some query detail; Analytics can apply thresholds or group values into an other row. A missing row therefore needs investigation rather than an automatic zero in the performance narrative.

## Test the customer journey without exposing customer data

Use an agreed test process for consent choices, mobile navigation, form validation, successful submission and duplicate actions. Label authorised test records so they can be excluded from commercial assessment. Do not put names, email addresses or message text into reporting parameters. Follow the organisation's approved privacy and access policies. Server-side measurement is not permission to bypass choices or a guarantee that all activity becomes measurable.

## Create an evidence register with confidence and ownership

For each suspected issue, record the observation, competing explanation, check performed and next owner. Classify the result as verified, plausible or unresolved. For example, a broken confirmation event can be verified in a controlled test; a seasonal change may remain a hypothesis. Keep business outcomes separate from measurement coverage. Do not multiply the observed lead count by a guessed missing-traffic factor and present the result as actual revenue.

## Choose an action that fits the remaining uncertainty

Repair a verified tracking defect before using the affected period to judge a content experiment. Where evidence is thin, prioritise reversible improvements with a clear customer benefit and set a review date. Low-volume pages may need longer observation or direct usability feedback rather than a premature winner declaration. Agree what new evidence would change the decision, and retain the uncertainty in the handover instead of hiding it in a dashboard.

## A handover checklist

- Define the decision and each source metric.

- Record collection changes and report-quality warnings.

- Test outcomes and duplicate handling with authorised records.

- Assign unresolved differences to an owner and review date.

- Separate measured results, estimates and unknown values.

**Illustrative scenario**Hypothetical example: search clicks remain stable while recorded enquiries fall after a form release. A controlled test confirms that the form accepts enquiries but the success event no longer fires. The team repairs that event, checks for duplicates and labels the affected reporting period. It uses private confirmed records to review demand where appropriate, without pretending those records reveal every visitor's source or recover all missing analytics history.

A few good questions

## Clarity before you commit.

[Ask Gavek](https://gavek.dk/contact/)

### Should Search Console clicks equal Analytics sessions?

No. They measure different interactions and apply different processing, timing and collection conditions. Document the mismatch and investigate changes in the relationship rather than treating unequal totals alone as a fault.

### Does an empty report mean nobody visited?

Not necessarily. Check the selected scope, dates, collection setup and reporting limitations. If evidence remains unavailable, describe it as unavailable rather than changing it to zero or inventing a replacement total.

### Can Gavek guarantee complete tracking?

No. A scoped review can identify defects, test agreed journeys and document limitations. It cannot remove all effects of consent, browser behaviour, reporting restrictions, offline activity or missing historical evidence.
