# Query fan-out: turn a complex question into useful topic coverage

Use possible subquestions to test whether a customer can complete a research task. Treat the map as an editorial hypothesis, not a list of hidden platform queries or measured prompt volumes.

## What the term describes

Google documents query fan-out as multiple related searches across subtopics and sources. It does not publish a permanent keyword list for each buyer question. An editor can explore possible subtopics to find missing explanations, but should not label that exercise a captured AI query trace. Distinguish a documented platform capability from your own proposed topic map.

## Worked example: a B2B supplier change

Illustrative prompt: “How should a Danish manufacturer choose a new website partner without losing international enquiries?” Possible areas include language architecture, migration responsibility, URL preservation, lead-form continuity, product documentation and acceptance evidence. Inventory current pages against those tasks. Keep migration engineering on its owner guide and link to language-release checks instead of reproducing both guides on a supplier-selection page.

## Worked example: a local service buyer

Illustrative prompt: “What should I check before booking ventilation maintenance for a small office?” The useful subquestions concern installation type, access, included checks, response arrangements, replacement parts and quote inputs. Some answers belong directly on the service page. A complex preparation checklist may deserve a supporting guide; six short synonym pages would fragment the answer.

## Worked example: a professional-services decision

Illustrative prompt: “Is AI-search work worth considering for a small Danish accounting firm?” Explore buyer language, current organic discoverability, approved service facts, available expert time, evidence inputs and measurement limitations. The first action might be correcting a misleading description rather than producing more articles. A commercial recommendation needs the business’s context, not an assumed universal AI budget.

## Build and validate the map

For each proposed subtopic record the customer decision, source of the question, existing owner URL and information still required. Rank by business relevance and whether the team can supply original evidence. Interview sales or support, inspect authorised search data and read real result pages. A generated subquestion can suggest research, but cannot prove demand. Group closely related questions into useful sections.

## Review the customer’s completed path

Start from the main question and follow the planned links in order. Can a new reader understand the choices without encountering repeated introductions or a dead end? Give every destination a distinct role and return route. Reassess the map when the service changes; do not rewrite it just because one test generates a slightly different response.
