# Decide when to refresh, merge or retire website content

A declining page needs diagnosis before deletion. A refresh plan should distinguish stale facts, changed demand, technical problems and overlapping intent, then choose an action that preserves useful information and legitimate visitor journeys.

## Assemble evidence at URL level

Record the purpose, important queries, available search history, conversions, backlinks, internal references and review date. Include seasonality and the limits of the observation period. A page can be valuable to existing customers even when search traffic is low. Check indexability and template failures before treating reduced impressions as a writing problem.

## Choose an action with a reason

Refresh a useful page when facts or explanations are outdated. Merge pages when they solve the same task and a combined destination genuinely helps readers. Retain distinct pages when audiences or decisions differ. Retire material with no remaining purpose, but document any support, contractual or historical use before removal. Do not redirect unrelated retired URLs to the homepage merely to avoid a 404.

## Review outcomes and maintain the record

For a merge, map old URLs to the closest relevant destination and update internal links. For an edit, identify the actual changed passages and supporting evidence. Recheck statuses, canonicals and discoverability after publication. Use a realistic comparison period and note other site changes. Changing the displayed year without improving the substance is not a content refresh.

## Illustrative scenario

Two guides explain the same discontinued product setup, but one still answers warranty questions. The team separates the current support answer from the obsolete setup instructions, plans relevant redirects and checks that support links still reach a useful page.

## Acceptance checklist
