# Maintain accurate business citations across locations

A business citation is a reference to a company in a directory, profile or other publication. The useful task is to help customers reach the right business with accurate details, rather than maximise the number of listings.

## Create an approved location register

For each real location, record the trading name, customer-facing address or service-area arrangement, phone, opening hours, primary URL and responsible person. Separate a closed location from a business that moved. Keep historical names and phone numbers as reconciliation evidence, not as additional identities to publish. Confirm that each profile meets the platform’s eligibility requirements before creating it.

## Prioritise corrections by customer impact

Inspect the business website, major map profiles, relevant industry sources and directories customers actually use. A wrong phone number deserves attention before a harmless abbreviation. Record the listing URL, problem, correction route, owner and verification date. Avoid creating another profile to solve an ownership dispute; use the provider’s established recovery or support process.

## Make updates auditable

When hours, address or ownership changes, update the master register and assign corrections across the selected sources. Revisit edited pages to confirm the public result. Keep unresolved duplicates and inaccessible accounts in the handover. Measure consistency and customer usability directly; citation volume alone is neither a local ranking guarantee nor evidence of trust.

## Illustrative scenario

A company relocates one of three branches. The correction list identifies the old branch URL and phone, updates the real destination and records a directory the team cannot yet edit. It does not invent a fourth branch to preserve the old address.

## Acceptance checklist

- Every location has an approved factual record

- Critical listings are revisited after correction

- Duplicates and access exceptions have named owners
